WASHINGTON -- A pharmaceutical giant is launching its own generic version of Viagra for erectile dysfunction, a new study has found.
The study, published in the Oct. 17 issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, tested the effectiveness of generic Viagra, made by a San Jose-based company called Cialis, and the brand name of the drug,, in more than half a million men between 40 and 70.
Researchers found that the generic Viagra, the active ingredient in Viagra, was about the same as Viagra, or the brand name of the drug, Cialis, on average. For comparison, the Viagra in the same class of drugs was about the same as the Cialis in the same class of drugs.
"The result of this study, and the one obtained in the medical journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that generic Viagra, like Viagra, is about as effective as the branded product," said Dr. David A. Klarmann, a urologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. "It is a very safe, very high-quality product."
Viagra was the first drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug was the first of a series of drugs approved by the FDA to treat other problems with erectile dysfunction.
But studies conducted by Klarmann and his associates in 2008 have found that generic drugs, including Viagra and Cialis, can cause heart problems.
"In some men, their heart doesn't work well, they may be suffering from heart problems, or they have a low blood pressure," said Klarmann. "Viagra is a very effective drug."
Viagra is manufactured by Eli Lilly and has sales of $2.1 billion worldwide, the company said.
"The company has not put a single ingredient in Viagra that works," said Klarmann, "and it has not put a single ingredient that has the same effect on men in the bedroom."
Viagra was first approved in 1992 by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and in 2003, the FDA approved it for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, also known as hypertension, in adults and in children.
Because it is sold in pill form, it is taken orally or by injection and is prescribed in a single dose to treat erectile dysfunction.
Although it is not known whether Viagra is safe, Klarmann said, "we do not know, and certainly not in a medical journal, exactly how this drug works, and we don't know for sure at this time, whether Viagra has a benefit for this specific patient group."
Viagra is taken by mouth and is taken about one hour before sexual activity. It is effective for about four hours and the drug may take effect within 30 minutes. But when taken more than once, it may cause more side effects such as chest pain, flushing, nausea, vomiting, and indigestion.
Klarmann also said that he believes this study adds to the existing confusion about generic drugs. "I don't think it is that simple. It is very complicated," he said.
Viagra and Cialis are two of the most widely prescribed drugs for treating erectile dysfunction. Both work by increasing blood flow to the penis, but the FDA hasn't approved the drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
"Viagra is only approved for a few reasons, and the reason for that is because of its effectiveness and the risk of side effects," said Klarmann, who has studied Viagra in more than 40 patients.
